Overview

Osea Island is an inhabited island in the estuary of the River Blackwater, Essex, East England. It is approximately 550 acres in size and is connected to the north bank of the river by a causeway, covered at high water. Sitting right on the water's edge with magnificent views along the beach and across the estuary is The Captain's House.  It has been built in a cool beach house style that's more reminiscent of the USA or the Caribbean than the UK.  The house is mainly on one level, spread out laterally across extensive gardens and grounds with private stairs leading down to the beach.

On The Coast you can settle back into Osea’s unhurried pace with its south facing beach properties looking out onto spectacular views across the estuary. Silence is possibly the islands biggest luxury and with an absence of street-lighting, traffic and aircraft noise you may sleep deeply and awaken refreshed to the sound of birdsong. The Captain’s House is a 1920s villa by the shore on the heights of Osea (five metres above sea level). This capacious, superbly sited house is self-catered. It is coolly done out: four-poster beds, leather sofas, freestanding baths, exposed floorboards, antique books, old copies of National Geographic (a 1962 edition proclaimed Tahiti to be the “finest island in the world”) and a colonial feel, thanks to artfully arranged old suitcases and black-and-white framed photos of yachts.
